Consequences of Non-Compliance: Failure to Apply for a Director ID

We have received an important update from the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) regarding director identification numbers (director ID), and we want to ensure that you are well-informed about your obligations in this regard.

ABRS is actively reaching out to directors who have not yet fulfilled their obligations. Failure to apply for a director ID can lead to serious consequences, including:

  • Being required to attend an interview with a delegate of the Registrar to provide an explanation for the delay
  • Referral to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) for potential investigation and prosecution

It’s crucial to understand that failing to apply for a director ID on time is considered a criminal offence. You can find further details about director ID penalties and offences via the ASIC website.

If you need to apply for a director ID, you are able to apply via your MyGov account. We are here to support you through this process therefore please feel free to give us a call via (02) 4365 6789.

For directors residing in Australia who are unable to apply online or via phone, they will need to complete a paper application form specifically designed for individuals living in Australia.

Similarly, directors residing outside Australia who cannot apply online will need to complete a separate paper application form tailored for individuals residing outside Australia.
