What is a director ID?
From November 2021, the Government is introducing a new requirement for all company directors to apply for a unique identification number (director ID).
The director ID will require all directors to confirm their identity and will be a 15 digit identifier for each person who consents to being a director. The director ID will be kept permanently and provides traceability of a director’s profile and association with companies over their career.
If you want to become a director or are already one, you’ll need a director ID. When you need to apply depends on the date you become a director.
Why you need a director ID?
Shareholders, employees, creditors, consumers, external administrators and regulators are entitled to know the names and specific details of the directors of a company.
All directors are required by law to verify their identity before receiving a director ID. This is important because it will help to:
- prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities;
- make it easier for external administrators and regulators to trace directors’ relationships with companies over time;
- identify and eliminate director involvement in unlawful activity, such as illegal phoenix activity.
Who needs a director ID?
You will need to apply for a director ID if you are a director of either:
- a company, which will have an Australian Company Number (ACN);
- an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation;
- A corporate trustee, for example, of a self-managed super fund;
- A charity or not-for-profit organisation that is a company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation;
- registered Australian body, for example, an incorporated association that is registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and trades outside the state or territory in which it is incorporated; or
- a foreign company registered with ASIC and carrying on business in Australia (regardless of where that individual lives).
Who doesn’t need a director ID?
You will not need to apply for a director ID if you are a:
- director of an incorporated association (with no ABRN) registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC);
- company secretary but not a director;
- acting as an external administrator of a company; or
- run your business as a sole trader or partnership.
When do you need to apply for a director ID?
Directors can start applying now for their Director ID as of 1 November 2021.
Existing directors will have until 30 November 2022 to apply for their Director ID.

How to apply for a Director ID?
You need to apply for your own director ID.
The fastest way to do this is online using the myGovID app.
- To start the application, the director will need a myGovID. (Note, the myGovID app is different to MyGov. Your myGovID is your digital identity and unique to you. The myGovID app lets you prove who you are and securely sign in to participating government online services, such as myGov.)
- Gather your documents, including your Tax File Number, your residential address and two documents to verify your identity.
- Complete your application. Once you have your myGovID and documents, you can log in and apply for your director ID. The application process should take less than five minutes. Apply for director ID
